POTEAU–Social skills and a passion for helping others are important parts of being a successful health care professional. Timothy Olive learned those traits working at a grocery store his family owned in nearby Heavener and now uses them at Mercy Clinic Family Medicine.
“We knew everyone around, and we took pride in our service to the community,” said Olive, a board-certified nurse practitioner who combines his people skills with medical expertise at the Poteau clinic also staffed by Dr. Arthur Pearson III. “Helping others in times of need and seeing my interventions actually improve patients’ quality of life is the best feeling that I know.”
Olive is trained in internal medicine and gerontology. He earned a bachelor of science in nursing from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah and a master’s in nursing from the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. That background fits his passion for helping patients with diabetes, metabolic syndrome, heart disease and acute illnesses.
When Olive and wife Jamie’s twins were born nine weeks premature and spent four weeks in a neonatal intensive care unit, he saw the compassion the nursing staff had for his family.
“I knew this was the profession God made me for, and I’ve never regretted that decision,” he said. “I feel I have the best job in the world. It fits who I am and what I feel God wants me to be.”
Olive, who still resides in Heavener, credits mentors Oklahoma providers Dr. Gary Johnston, Dr. Robert Nowlin, Dr. Kamil Nemri and Jimmy Williams. His biggest thanks go to his wife of 26 years and three children, Blake, 23, and 19-year-old twins Bailey and Beau. They all stood by his side during the long medical education journey.
“I spent 12 years in school and worked full time to support our family,” he said. “Jamie took care of the kids and also worked as a cosmetologist and maintained our home. It was a strain on us, but we knew it was a worthy cause. We made it our goal to finish, and we did.”
Olive, who enjoys hunting, fishing, traveling and spending time with friends and family, is available for appointments at Mercy Clinic Family Medicine, 2110 N. Broadway in Poteau. The phone number is (918) 647-7416.
