Alexis Armstrong and Alexis Hartsock are recipients of South West Association of Student Assistance Programs (SWASAP) Student Leadership Conference scholarships. Both students are active participants in the Upward Bound Math Science (UBMS) program at Carl Albert State College.
Alexis Armstrong is a sophomore at Howe High School and Alexis Hartsock is a sophomore at Panama High School.
Students from several states were chosen to attend the SWASAP student leadership conference held at Sky Ranch in Van, Texas. The students were asked to write an essay regarding what the conference taught them about leadership, and the winners were awarded $285 scholarships.
“I am so proud of these girls for the hard work they put into writing their essays,” said CASC UBMS director Tara Foos. “I am beyond excited for them to receive these scholarships.”
Upward Bound Math Science is one of the TRIO programs housed at Carl Albert State College, and is funded by the U.S. Department of Education with a budget of $326,077 annually serving 74 participants.
UBMS provides assistance to first generation and/or low income high school students as well as disabled students in their preparation for higher education. The Upward Bound Math Science program is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students. The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and to encourage them to pursue post secondary degrees in math and science, and ultimately careers in the math and science profession.
