A 44-year-old Talihina man died in an auto accident Saturday at 11:30 p.m. around 12 miles south of Red Oak in Latimer County.
Martin James was a passenger in a 2000 Chevrolet truck driven by George James, 53, of Talihina. Martin James was transported by LeFlore County EMS to McAlester Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead with head injuries.
George James was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa and is in stable condition with a head injury.
The truck was going south on State Highway 63A and departed the road to the right. It struck a tree and overturned once, coming to rest on its wheels. Both the driver and passenger were pinned for approximately 30 minutes before being freed by the Talihina Fire Department.
The report by Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Michael Scantling says there was an odor of alcoholic beverage. The accident is under investigation. It is not known if seat belts were in use by the driver or passenger. An airbag was equipped, but did not deploy.
