Top-seeded Heavener and second-seeded Pocola advanced to the winner’s bracket finals of the 2017 fast-pitch LeFlore County Tournament on Tuesday with wins.
Heavener won a pitcher’s duel with Spiro, 3-0, while Pocola handed defending LCT champion Poteau its first loss, 11-1.
Heavener and Pocola play Thursday at 5 p.m.
The Lady Wolves’ Makenzie Wilson and Spiro’s Hallie Harper both had excellent games on the mound. Wilson allowed only four hits while striking out eight. Harper was also efficient, allowing 10 hits with five strikeouts.
Heavener took a 1-0 lead on the first on a hit by Rilegh Pate before Brylee Simmons drove her in for the go-ahead run. The score stayed 1-0 until the seventh when Heavener’s Kylee Free tripled with one out.
After a walk to Wilson, Emily Yandell hit a grounder to third. With Free scoring easily on the play, Yandell beat out the throw at first. Sydney Crase then singled to right-center field for the second run of the inning and a 3-0 lead.
Heavener retired the side in the bottom half of the inning to win the battle of top 10 teams in 3A. The Lady Wolves were ranked 10th while Spiro was eighth.
Pocola scored four runs in the first inning and coasted to the 11-1 win over Poteau, sending the Lady Pirates into the loser’s bracket.
