Heavener’s seventh and eighth grade football team improved to 2-0 with a 28-20 win over Hartshorne on Tuesday. The Wolves opened with a 32-0 win at Panama last week.
Kalobe Hudlow scored four touchdowns and added a pair of 2-point conversions for the Wolves.
Hudlow’s first score came on a 14-yard zone keeper around left side, receiving a great block by Jacob Thompson to spring him. The conversion failed, leaving Heavener ahead, 6-0.
The Wolves’ defense then held the Miners on fourth down with a great play by nose tackle Clayton Dehart stopping the quarterback in the backfield.
On the next drive, Heavener punted after six plays. But it was short lived hope for the visitors with the Wolves’ defense holding again for a three and out.
After a fumble, the Miners received the ball back, scoring on a 58-yard quarterback keeper.
On the ensuing drive the Wolves get a great block from Elijah Vaughn and answered with a 55-yard quarterback keeper of their own by Hudlow for a touchdown. The conversion was good, giving Heavener a 14-6 lead.
Hartshorne then went on a 14-play drive. The drive ended at the 2-yard line with the Wolves getting an outstanding goal line stand from the entire defensive front seven.
Hartshorne opened the second half with a 14-play drive, ending with a 25-yard touchdown pass. The conversion run was good to tie the score at 14.
After another turnover, the Miners took over and then scored on a 3-yard quarterback sweep around the right side for a touchdown. After the conversion failed, Heavener led 20-14.
The Wolves answered with a 9-play drive with great blocking from the line and receivers leading to big runs. The drive ended with a 1-yard blast by Hudlow to tie the game at 20 with 3:30 left in the fourth quarter.
With Hartshorne trying to throw deep, and a lot of pressure applied to the quarterback by the Wolves’ defense, Hudlow intercepted a pass and returned it 70 yards for the go-ahead touchdown.
The conversion was good, giving Heavener a 28-20 lead.
Garrick Caldwell sealed the win for Heavener with an interception.
