SHAWNEE—Heavener’s Barbara Johnson won the state 3A cross country championship on Saturday.
Johnson ran down and passed Marietta’s Mandy Sykora near the finish line to win Heavener’s first cross country state championship.
After finishing fourth in the regional last week, Johnson ran a time of 11:53.81 to by less than a second over Sykora.
Teammate Iris Martinez was 56th with a time of 14:17.75.
For the Wolves, Maliek Lira was 56th with a time of 19:31.31 while Nathan Binns was 71st at 19:59.53.
In Wister’s first year fielding a cross country team, the Wildcats finished 12th at the 2A state meet. Kolton Lynn was fourth at 17:09.72, Mason Goforth came in 75th at 19:53.84, Koby Midgley ran a time of 20:55.62 for 104th, Cash Balentine finished 110th at 21:12.34 and Kaiden Jackson was 111th with a time of 21:13.25.
Poteau’s lone runner in the 4A meet, Kayleigh Shankle, was 71st with a time of 13:43.34.
