POTEAU—After losing a close game in Thursday’s opening game of the Class 4A district here, Poteau removed any drama from the two remaining games in the best-of-three series with Muldrow.
The Pirates won the second game Thursday, 14-4, then battered the Bulldogs again on Friday, 13-5, to win the district tournament and advance to next week’s regional tournament.
Poteau struggled to get hits in the opening loss, but that was not a problem in the final two games of the series, including Friday’s win when the Pirates banged out 13 hits and built an early lead before putting the game away with eight runs in the top of the fourth.
Mason Grimm led off the inning with a single and added another one later in the inning as the Pirates banged out seven hits in the inning and Muldrow had two errors to aid in the rally.
Playing in what was likely his last home game, senior Kade McMillin was 2-4 with a pair of doubles to lead the Pirates at the plate.
Grimm also had two hits in three at bats and senior Hunter Bradshaw also had a pair of singles.
Roger Barcheers pitched the first five innings to pick up the win on the mound before getting relief help from Brynn Hammon in the sixth.
Barcheers allowed six hits while striking out five and only allowed three walks. Hammon gave up one hit in his one inning of work to close out the Bulldogs.
The Pirates improve to 21-10 and become the eighth LeFlore County team to win its district tournament.
The OSSAA will announce the regional pairings on Thursday.
