As your representative in the U.S. House of Representatives, I have made it my priority to stand against federal regulations that hurt our way of life. And there is no better example of just how out of control Washington is than the Obama administration’s attempts to cut the lights on Oklahoma.
This week, in the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, we passed a bill that protects all Americans from the real-life consequences of the Obama administration’s so-called Clean Power Plan. The Ratepayer Protection Act (H.R. 2042) would give states the power to protect families and businesses from skyrocketing electricity costs and reduced grid reliability due to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) proposed Clean Power Plan rule.
I helped write this important bill, which passed the full House Energy and Commerce Committee by a vote of 28-23.
Many families simply cannot afford the Obama administration’s liberal agenda. Ratepayers across Oklahoma need a regulatory system that promotes fairness, and I am encouraged by the ongoing efforts in Oklahoma and by the conservative majorities in Congress to protect our families from the real life consequences of the EPA’s proposed rule.
I believe in efficiently using our country’s vast energy resources while protecting the air we breathe, the water our kids swim in, and the land on which we raise our families. But, I also believe it is counterproductive for the federal government to enact regulations that are fundamentally flawed and would harm all Americans, as well as trample states’ rights.
Time and again, this president and his administration have prioritized pocketbook environmentalists over Oklahoma’s communities. The administration continues to bypass Congress by pushing its liberal agenda through rulemaking, which only complicates the process and makes it difficult for those who would be impacted by a rule to have any meaningful say in the outcome.
In Oklahoma, projections have shown that the EPA’s proposed Clean Power Plan rule could lead to electrical prices increasing by 15 percent on average from 2017 to 2031. Let me say that again – the Obama administration wants to increase you power bill by 15 percent. During a time when our families are tightening our belts, a rate hike of this magnitude would cause significant harm for some of our most vulnerable neighbors.
Even more, the Southwest Power Pool has released an analysis of the proposed rule and indicates a regional compliance approach to meet the EPA’s 2030 deadline would cost an estimated $2.9 billion each year in capital investment and energy production costs.
I will continue to work, in my position on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, to support conservative solutions that represent fairness and keep the lights on in Oklahoma.
