POTEAU—Pending approval of the Van Buren, Ark. school board in its meeting on Tuesday, Poteau football coach Greg Werner will take over the Pointers’ football program.
Werner served as Poteau’s coach for three seasons and had a 25-11 record, including a trip to the 2013 state finals where the Pirates lost to Anadarko.
He led the Pirates to a 7-5 record in 2014, 12-2 in 2013 and 6-4 in 2012. Poteau made the playoffs in his last two years. The trip to the state finals was the first time for Poteau since 1950 and only the third time in school history.
Prior to coming to Poteau, he had a successful tenure as the head coach at Broken Bow.
Poteau is scheduled to host Van Buren in the second week of the 2015 season. The Pirates defeated Van Buren two out of the last three years, losing in 2014 at Van Buren.
Whoever replaces Werner will step into a good situation as the Pirates are loaded for 2015 and the upcoming years with a strong senior class featuring record-setting running back Roger Barcheers and linebacker Austin Archey.
The Pirates will also be playing in improved facilities as artificial turf will be installed in Costner Stadium over the summer.
