Monday’s heavy rain damaged the bridge on East Avenue D and East Second Street, forcing the City of Heavener to close the road.
The bridge is on the southwest corner of the Medical Building. City crews blocked traffic from all three directions until the damage can be evaluated. The road showed no damage, just the bridge on the south side of the intersection.
The rain washed away part of the support structure for the bridge, which was likely built in the 1930s. The two support poles along with rocks and dirt on both sides of the bridge were loosened or washed away from the bridge.
According to weatherunderground.com, the Heavener area received 2.59 inches of rain on Monday, which in addition to damaging the bridge, caused minor flooding along the oil branch and to the lot on the northern side of the First United Methodist Church.
