QUINTON—Spiro’s boys stayed alive in the Class 3A area tournament with a 70-66 win over Idabel on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs advance to Monday night’s consolation championship game and another shot at Sequoyah Tahlequah with the winner advancing to the state tournament.
Sequoyah defeated Spiro, 71-68, in the regional championship game. The Indians lost to Atoka on Saturday to fall into the loser’s bracket.
After trailing 9-2 early, Spiro came back to take the lead in the second quarter and went up eight late in the first half. Spiro then led by 14, 54-40, late in the third.
Idabel got within seven but McKinley Whitfield made a dunk with 1:15 left for a 67-58 lead. Idabel then hit a 3 in final seconds for a two-point game. The Bulldogs’ Jerry Vega was fouled with two seconds left and hit both foul shots for the final four-point margin.
Whitfield led Spiro with 24 points. Lafayette Hutchinson added 15, Braedon Howe had 14 and Vega finished with 10.
