POTEAU–I, Jeff Shockley, seek to continue our progress and serve as your Mayor for the City of Poteau.
We have seen a lot of changes in the city during the time you have allowed me the honor to serve as your Mayor. With you, the citizens and the city, we have done great things including replacing the old wooden single-lane bridge going up Cavanal with a new two lane concrete bridge, relocating the library from its 40-year-old building to the new Patrick Lynch Public Library, and constructing the state of the art, in addition to debt free, Donald W. Reynolds Community Center.
We have completed numerous projects enhancing our infrastructure including sewer plant, sewer lines and water line improvements. These enhancements will continue positive growth and make Poteau the place people would like to live.
We are beginning Dewey Avenue enhancements to make downtown more appealing as well as continuing to remove numerous eye sores and dilapidated structures around town. I understand cleanup projects don’t happen as fast as we would all like, but there are numerous hurdles to clear in the process.
All of these things are what keep Poteau moving forward. From the ice storm that held the city captive for several days to the 4th of July celebrations that bring a community together, I have served you with pride.
By continuing to let me be your mayor we will strive to utilize all we have done to seek a brighter future that includes the pursuit of quality jobs. The industrial park has room for growth and corporations are beginning to look for expansion as the national economy improves.
A future that includes improving parks and recreation, such as the expansion we have done with the baseball fields, soccer fields and the skate park, we will build walking trails and designate cyclist routes and signs to improve their safety.
Poteau will be promoted through continued support of the balloon fest and the numerous events that are held around the area. The Oklahoma Harley-Davidson rally scheduled for next fall will be a huge undertaking but with cooperation from local businesses and the Chamber we will be ready.
Public relations are a part of the job but the office of mayor requires so much more. I feel my strengths include experience preparing the annual budget, navigating union negotiations, personnel issues, emergency and floodplain management, and experience in listening.
These will provide the means to complete future goals we all have. I humbly ask for your continued support and your vote for Mayor of Poteau. Together we will move forward.
