QUINTON—Sequoyah Tahlequah used a big run in the third quarter and went on to defeat Spiro, 62-52, in a 3A area consolation championship game here on Monday.
The win was Sequoyah’s second in a week over the Bulldogs after pulling out a 71-68 victory in the regional championship game last Tuesday in Muskogee.
Fifth-ranked Sequoyah, now 19-8, advances to the 3A state tournament while Spiro’s season ends with a 19-10 record.
Sequoyah led only 35-32 in the third quarter before going on a 19-3 run which Spiro never recovered from. The Bulldogs did cut the margin to single digits late but it was not enough as Lafayette Hutchinson scored 10 points in the final period.
After the loss to Sequoyah, Spiro defeated Kingston and Idabel to get another shot at Sequoyah, which lost to top-ranked Atoka in the area championship game on Saturday.
McKinley Whitfield led the Bulldogs with 18 points. Jerry Vega and Hutchinson each had 13.
