WILBURTON—Quinton’s Kaycee Turner hit the go-ahead free throw with nine seconds left and the Lady Savages went on to edge Howe, 46-44, in a thrilling Class 2A consolation championship game here Monday night.
The win puts Quinton in the state tournament on Thursday while Howe’s spectacular season ends with a 26-3 record.
Morgan Hillebrand of Howe hit a pair of free throws with 1:10 left to give the Lady Lions a 44-43 lead after they trailed by 43-38.
With 19 seconds left, Quinton’s Shelby Miller hit a free throw to tie the score. Howe missed a shot at the other end and Turner was fouled in a scramble for the loose ball.
She made one of two free throws to give Quinton the lead again. The Lady Lions missed a shot and Quinton’s Shelby Brennan was fouled with 0.1 seconds remaining.
Brennan also made one of the two free throws for the final score.
Quinton improves to 25-4 with the win and won three straight games in the area tournament to qualify for state after losing in triple overtime at Preston in the regional finals.
Brenna scored 16 points to lead Quinton while Courtney Taylor scored 12 and Turner finished with 10.
