The Howe girls and Talihina boys will be playing for a trip to the state tournament while the Howe and Spiro boys are hoping to win and play another day on Saturday.
Action in the 2A regional will once again be at Wilburton High School while Spiro travels to Quinton for a 3 p.m. game against Idabel.
The Howe girls and Talihina boys are playing Preston for area championships. The girls play at 6:30 p.m. with the boys tipping off at approximately 8 p.m. Winners advance to the state tournament while losers play again on Monday for a berth in the state tournament.
The Lady Lions are 26-1 and ranked sixth in the state while Preston is 23-5 and third. The two teams have not played this year.
Talihina’s boys and Preston will play a second time. Preston won the earlier decision, 43-35, on Jan. 3 although the Golden Tigers had the lead late.
Two years ago, Talihina defeated Preston in the same round to win the area championship and advance to state.
Howe’s boys overcame Central (see STORY) on Friday to advance. The Lions 23-6 and No. 12 face off against fourth-ranked Haworth at 3 p.m. Haworth defeated Summit Christian on Friday night, 63-46, to advance.
The winner plays the Talihina/Preston loser on Monday at 8 p.m. for a trip to the state tournament.
Spiro’s boys came one step closer to another trip to the state tournament with a win over Kingston on Friday (see STORY). Next up for the Bulldogs is Idabel, which also advanced on Friday with a 86-63 victory over Hartshorne.
Spiro and Idabel play at 3 p.m. The winner will play the loser of the Sequoyah Tahlequah/Atoka game on Monday at 8 p.m. for the right to go to the state tournament.
