Heavener city judge Douglas W. Schmuck has submitted his resignation effective immediately.
Schmuck’s resignation has left Heavener without a judge and will cause the scheduled court night on Tuesday to be postponed while the city looks for a replacement.
His resignation letter to Heavener city manager Larry Jones reads as follows:
Pursuant to our phone conversation a few minutes ago, it is my understanding that the City Council is seeking a new Judge.
I have truly enjoyed serving as City Judge in Heavener these past 15 years, and have given the job my best shot. However, if the Council has decided to go in a different direction, far be it from me to stand in their way.
Please consider this my letter of resignation, effective immediately.
I truly wish the City of Heavener all the best.
The council has discussed the possibility of getting a new judge at two recent meetings. Council members have received complaints on the way Schmuck had handled the cases involving some people who had to appear in court.
In the most recent council meeting, Jones had asked the council members if they were interested in him seeking other possible judges for when the term expired in July.
