WILBURTON—Howe’s boys stayed close to fourth-ranked Haworth for a half on Saturday in the 2A area tournament.
Haworth finally wore down the Lions and took control in the third quarter en route to a 75-55 win to end Howe’s season at 23-7.
The two teams were tied at 17 at the end of the first quarter and Haworth only led 29-26 at the half. Haworth then outscored Howe, 27-10, in the third quarter to advance to Monday’s consolation championship game against Preston, a 45-41 loser to Talihina on Saturday (see STORY).
The winner of that game will advance to the state tournament.
Gaven Brown had 17 points in the first half as the Lions broke Haworth’s press and found some easy baskets. The third quarter was a different story as Brown was held scoreless and the Lions started turning the ball over with Haworth converting on the other end.
Oscar Rivera had 23 points to lead Haworth, now 25-5. Jerry Threadgill Jr. added 13, Darian Threadgill had 12 and Dayan Gray finished with 11.
Brown finished with 24 points to lead Howe while Josiah Mitchell added 10.
