The State Highway 83 bridge is closed due to damage.
The Highway 83 bridge over the KCS railroad tracks is closed in both directions a half mile east of Highway 59 while engineers assess needed repairs. While filling potholes Friday, crews discovered more extensive damage to the bridge and after close inspection, decided to close it to traffic immediately.
The length of time the bridge will be closed is still being determined as engineers are evaluating needed repairs.
Barricades are currently in place and signs are being moved to locations to better redirect traffic.
Drivers wanting to go east will need to use northbound US-59 through Poteau into Pocola on to SH-112 or southbound US-59 to SH-128 in Heavener. Drivers wanting to come west into the state will need to travel north to Ft. Smith and take SH-112 in Pocola, or head south in Arkansas to SH-28/Oklahoma SH-128.
This bridge was built in 1937 and carries an average daily vehicle count of 2,300 vehicles per day. More information will be sent as conditions change and the timeline for repairs is determined.
