Thor’s Hammer is one of the more challenging runs offered up to runners.
“It is not your typical road race”, according to race organizer Roy Faulkenberry. “While much of the race is run on what some might define as a gravel road, it is actually a cross country race around the mountain on logging roads and trails that will put your stamina to the test.”
Friends of Heavener Runestone and the City of Heavener is sponsoring Thor’s Hammer consisting if simultaneous ran 5K, 10K and half marathon trail run challenge.
The races are scheduled for April 25 at Heavener Runestone Park. The race will start at 9 a.m. in the overlook area of the Park. Check-in time starts at 7:30 a.m., runners can pick up their packets and numbers at that time.
Thor’s Hammer Trail Run Challenge is a tough course. You start in the park overlook and experience a steep climb of almost 380 feet in the first half mile. Then you have a gradual climb of another 100 feet before the trail turns down for about 2 miles dropping about 300 feet.
The course then climbs 100 feet to a plateau where you experience approximately 3 miles of up and down hills across Middle Mountain and reach the turn around. On the way back you will take a side trail to a well head cross over to another well head through a ravine, nicknamed “The Hammer” and then return to the main trail for a return to the Park.
The name for the race, Thor’s Hammer, is in keeping with the Viking theme of Heavener Runestone Park. Friends of Heavener Runestone is the organization formed to offer support for the park and help with fundraising to offset operational costs. Faulkenberry said, “We have made this race unique and challenging, because most runners do like a good challenge and like to test themselves.”
Tatur Racing will be providing chip time of the races.
