SPIRO—Spiro’s boys went on one of their patented runs in the second quarter and went on to hand Hartshorne only its third loss of the season here Thursday in the Class 3A regional tournament.
The Bulldogs went on a 24-7 run in the second quarter, highlighted by two McKinley Whitfield dunks and Spiro moved into the regional finals with a 68-47 win.
Spiro takes on Sequoyah Tahlequah on Saturday at 8 p.m. for the regional championship. The Lady Bulldogs play the previous game, also against Sequoyah Tahlequah, at 6:30 p.m. after advancing with a 50-44 win over Heavener (see STORY).
In a rematch of a game Hartshorne won in December at the Wilburton Tournament, it was close through the first quarter as the Bulldogs held a 12-11 lead.
But the second quarter was the difference. Spiro got its running game going and Hartshorne had no answers.
Jerry Vega scored 23 points to lead four Bulldogs in double figures. Whitfield finished with 12 while D.T. Neal and Lafayette Hutchinson each added 10 points.
