My name is Monte Shockley II and I am running for a seat on the Poteau city council. I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about myself and why I am running for this position.
I have wanted to be on the city council for many years, however the ward I live in has two seats on the council. They are filled by Jim Holstead and Paul Quirk. I know and respect both men. I also admire the work, time and service they have given to our great city.
Now, Paul Quirk after being on the city council for 23 years was ready to retire and travel more with his wife Kathy. I decided it was the right time for me to run.
My only hesitation was, would this hurt my uncle Jeff Shockley’s re-election efforts as the mayor of Poteau? I visited with him and his answer was anyone in the city limits could run and told me if I knew in my heart I could add value for the city of Poteau to go ahead and file for the position.
So I went to election board at 8 a.m. on Monday morning and filed.
I have been married to my wife Ashley for 13 years. We have three children, Morgin 4, Anna 2 and Track 3 months old. We attend the Poteau Church of Christ. I was born and raised in Poteau, went to Poteau Schools, had many great teachers along the way, then off to college.
I am a hard working family man. I work with my father at our business Shockley’s Auto Sales, Inc in Poteau. I am also a rancher, we raise Registered Horned Herefords and we are one of the few Total Performance Breeders in the region.
We raise breeding bulls for other ranches and have sold bulls to other breeders in nine different states. Both businesses are located in Poteau and employ Poteau people. We grow a garden every summer in which our kids are very involved with as well as helping with our cows.
We believe in buying and spending locally. We feel it is very important to keep our money close to home. We live in a great city with lots of things happening and improving. It makes me happy to drive down Main Street and see all the renovations and new businesses.
I like reading the paper and seeing the chamber doing ribbon cuttings for new members’ grand openings. I am on the board of directors for the Poteau Chamber of Commerce and feel it is doing great things.
My goal as a council member is to do everything I can to help Poteau be cleaner, safer and more prosperous. Poteau is where I will raise my children in church and they will attend Poteau Schools. It is my dream to see my home town grow and prosper so young people can go to college or trade school and choose a career then be able to move back to Poteau where they too can find opportunities to work and raise their families.
This is where I grew up, live and work. It is home to my entire family and my friends, there is no place else I would live. Thank you for reading and it would be an honor to serve you on the city council.
I ask for your vote on April 7.
