POTEAU—Funeral services for Jack O. Davis, Sr., 81, of Poteau are Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Steve Young officiating.
Burial will follow at the Heavener Memorial Park under the direction of Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home of Heavener.
He was born Feb. 19, 1933 in Heavener to Acely Owen and Deborah (Sommerville) Davis and passed away on Feb. 15, 2015 in Poteau.
He attended Heavener Public Schools where he excelled in sports, particularly football. He then attended the University of Oklahoma on a football scholarship under the coaching of Bud Wilkerson. In 1952, he married Barbara Brown of Heavener and then served in the United States Marine Corps from 1953 to 1955, where he played football during those years.
After leaving the United States Marine Corps, he was awarded an athletic scholarship to the University of Arizona. He played professional football for the Washington Redskins in 1958, while he earned a Masters Degree in Education graduating in 1959 from the University of Arizona. In the fall of 1959 he began his coaching career in Page, Az., where his team went 8-1. He then was a charter member of the Denver Broncos in 1960.
After the Broncos, he coached four years in Imperial County, Calif., nine years at Hueneme High School in Hueneme, Calif., three years at Apache Junction High School in Apache Junction, Az., where he won a state championship, two years in Palmdale, Calif., and 14 years at Oxnard High School in Oxnard, Calif.
After retiring, he moved back to LeFlore County and married Shelia.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Barbara (Brown) Davis.
Survivors are his wife, Sheila Davis, of the home; a daughter, Suzie Quillman and husband Chuck of Fort Smith, Ark.; a son, Jack O. Davis, Jr. and wife Dana of Fort Smith, Ark.; a stepson, Johnathon David McAlester of Poteau; a brother, Jim F. Davis and wife Myrna of Poteau; seven grandchildren, Kevin Rice and wife Rachel, Kurt Rice and wife Stephanie, Brett Davis and wife Katie, Celeste Davis, Acely Jack Davis, Shannon Reid and Madeline Roozen; and three great granddaughters, Hailee Rice, Kristoffer Rice and Paige Rice.
Pallbearers are Kevin Rice, Kurt Rice, T.J. Holt, Chad Tolbert, Eddie Oneill and Daniel Cranfield.
The register book will be available to sign from noon until 8:30 p.m. Thursday, 8 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Friday, and 8 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
