SPIRO—Spiro’s girls knocked the Heavener girls into the loser’s bracket while Salina ended the Wolves’ season here on Thursday.
In a winner’s bracket game, Spiro held off the Lady Wolves to take a 50-44 win while Salina overcame Noah Davis’ 38 points in a 66-58 win.
Heavener’s girls play Keys on Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Muskogee Civic Center. Spiro advances to the regional championship game against Sequoyah Tahlequah on Saturday at 6:30 p.m., also at the Civic Center.
After Heavener took its only lead of the second half, 31-30, on a conventional three-point play by Jacee Manley late in the third quarter, Spiro went on a 9-0 run to take an eight-point lead.
Spiro still led 41-33 before Jodie Hill scored seven quick points within a minute to get the Lady Wolves back to within a point. The Lady Bulldogs responded, however, outscoring Heavener 9-4 down the stretch to move a game closer to another trip to the state tournament.
The win was Spiro’s second over Heavener this year. The Lady Bulldogs won the third-place game in the LeFlore County Tournament, 45-36.
Carleigha Thompson had 16 points to lead Spiro and Bailey Cox added 13. Heavener, which had a six-game winning streak snapped, was led by Hill with 15 points while Kenzie Wilson added 11.
Davis’ 38 points was a career high for Heavener, but the rest of the Wolves could manage only 20 points in the loss.
Salina advances to Friday’s game at 3 p.m. at the Civic Center.
