Heavener’s girls advanced to the semifinals of the 2015 LeFlore County Tournament while the boys’ upset bid against Spiro came up just short on Tuesday.
The Lady Wolves rallied in the second half to edge LeFlore, 46-43, while Heavener’s boys led much of the second half and had three late chances before falling to Spiro, 28-26.
Heavener’s girls advance to Friday’s semifinals. The fourth-seeded Lady Wolves play top-seeded and undefeated Howe at 7:10 p.m. at Spiro.
The Wolves fall into the loser’s bracket and play Whitesboro at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Howe.
Heavener controlled the pace and kept Spiro’s offense under control for most of the night before the Bulldogs outscored the Wolves, 12-6, in the third quarter.
Trailing late, Heavener had three shots to either take the lead or tie the game in the final minute, but all three missed, allowing Spiro to escape with the win.
The Wolves led 24-18 after a pair of free throws by Corry Duncan with 4:27 left. Spiro rallied and went on a 10-0 run to take a 28-24 lead. Heavener narrowed the margin to 28-26 on a pair of free throws by Noah Davis with 1:08 left.
Heavener had a pair of good looks for 3’s in the final minute as the ball went in and out both times and a last-second shot was wide.
The two-point loss was the closest anybody has played Spiro in its run of wins in the LCT.
Noah Davis had nine points to lead Heavener while Colt Dunigan added eight. Spiro, which advances to Thursday’s semifinal game against LeFlore, was led by Bradeon Howard’s eight points.

In a battle between fourth and fifth seeds, Heavener came back from a halftime deficit to slip past the fifth-seeded Lady Savages.
Heavener trailed 39-36 early in the fourth quarter before Jodie Hill hit a 3 and Kacee Manley put the Lady Wolves ahead for good with a basket with 4:09 left. This was part of an 8-0 run that gave Heavener a 44-39 lead.
LeFlore narrowed the advantage to 44-41 with a basket. Hill hit one free throw with 14 seconds left and after Kacyn Morris scored to trim the lead to 45-43, Hill hit another free throw with 5.3 seconds left for the final score.
