POTEAU—Heavener’s girls scored the final 10 points to overcome Poteau while the Pirates were deadly from outside in a win over the Wolves on Friday night.
The Lady Wolves’ Azure Watkins rebounded her own missed free throw and scored a layup with 17 seconds left for the go-ahead basket in a 40-36 win over Poteau while the Pirates nailed 13 shots from beyond the 3-point line in a 64-45 win.
Poteau’s girls led 36-30 after a pair of free throws by Darci Kuck with 2:10 led before Heavener rallied. Jodie Hill scored a pair of baskets with 14 seconds to cut the margin to two points before Jacee Manley’s shot with 1:30 left tied the score.
Neither team could score again until Watkins was fouled with 21.9 seconds left. She missed both free throws, but grabbed the rebound after the second miss and drove in for the winning shot. Hill added a pair of free throws late for the final four-point advantage.
Poteau, which played without Kandace Standridge, was hurt when Sunnie McConnell went out with an injury late and Kenzie Newman fouled out.
Heavener, now 7-2, was led by Watkins with 12 points and Hill with 11.
Kuck led the Lady Pirates, now 2-7, with 10 points.
Poteau’s boys were deadly from downtown in the win, hitting 13 shots from beyond the 3-point line, including six from Ben Klutts. The Pirates grabbed the lead in the first quarter as they nailed four 3-point baskets.
Heavener rallied to tie the score at 26 at the half, only to see the Pirates get hot again as Poteau made an additional six 3’s in the third quarter to break the game open. Sequoyah Sanders added four 3’s for the Pirates while Heavener only made one 3-point basket in the game.
The Pirates improved to 4-4 with the win. Sanders paced Poteau with 20 points and Klutts finished with 18.
Noah Davis and Colt Dunigan each had 14 for the Wolves, also 4-4.
