HARTFORD—Heavener’s girls let one slip away here Thursday in the semifinals of the Gary Ford Invitational Tournament, losing to Oden, 53-51.
The Lady Wolves built leads of eight points in the third quarter and seven in the fourth, only to see Oden rally both times.
The last one was the difference. Heavener led 46-39 with 4:15 left and went scoreless for over four minutes, missing four crucial free throws during the stretch as Oden scored 13 straight points to take a 52-46 lead.
Heavener did cut the deficit to two points with 3.2 seconds left after a basket by Makenzie Wilson and a 3-point basket by Reagan Alexander and got a long shot at the buzzer for the win, but it missed.
Oden’s big post, Kelsey Simmons was the difference, scoring 29 points in the win.
Heavener, now 1-1, will play in the third-place game on Saturday at noon. Jodie Hill led the Lady Wolves with 18 points, Jacee Manley scored 10 and Alexander had nine, all on 3’s.
