PARIS, Ark.—The Heavener Wolf Pups came up short against Booneville in the third and fourth grade championship game of the Arkansas/Oklahoma River Valley League on Saturday.
Booneville captured the championship with a 28-16 win over the Wolf Pups in a game which was played in cold weather with rain, sleet and ice falling in the second half.
After Booneville appeared to be headed to a blowout with a 20-0 lead, Heavener made things interesting. The Wolf Pups scored a touchdown and the 2-point conversion right before halftime on a 1-yard plunge by C.J. Halford. He added the PAT to cut the lead to 20-8.
Then, on the first drive of the third quarter, Halford scored again on an 11-yard run and after he ran it in for the PAT, Booneville’s lead was cut to 20-16.
Booneville responded with a drive deep in Heavener territory, but the Wolf Pups held on fourth down to get the ball and a chance to take the lead. Heavener turned the ball back over with a fumble and the Bearcats scored to put the game away.
The Wolf Pups end the season at 9-2. Coaches were Wes Hurst, Eric Dehart, Chad Ritter and Todd Vickers.
