Cool nights have arrived and according to the weather forecasts, this coming week will have our first battle with really wintry weather.
If you are looking for something to do today, the third and fourth grade Wolf Pups host Charleston in a semifinal playoff game at 3 p.m. at Harvey Stadium.
If you haven’t had the chance yet, now would be a good time to go for a cruise and see all the foliage before the cold weather which is coming empties the leaves. It always amazes me the beauty of this time of the year.
A trip to Cedar Lake or over to Talihina will give you plenty of opportunities.
The Heavener city council has called a special meeting for Monday at 6 p.m. to discuss a change in the charter. Heavener has always had a city manager type of government with the city council and mayor elected to oversee the manager.
Poteau has a full-time mayor type of government. The main reason why the mayor and a couple of council members want the change is to have more of a say in personnel.
They also want it set up more like a school board so they can approve the hiring and firing, if necessary. There are good and bad parts to both ideas. I’m of the “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it” mindset. It is my concern the council will have many more meetings instead of relying on the city manager, who seems to be doing the right things so far.
Heavener’s school board is also meeting on Monday at 6 p.m.
The football season ended for half the county teams last night. This is always a sad time, but four teams did make the playoffs. Talihina is obviously the team which will have the best shot of making a deep run in the playoffs.
The Golden Tigers host Quapaw in the first round on Friday. Poteau is at Wagoner, Spiro visits top-ranked Locust Grove and Panama visits Chander.
